January is one of the best months to visit Mexico, and from about January 7 one of the best values of the dry season. The coasts are sunny and dry, whale season is in full swing in Baja and on the Pacific, and the monarch butterflies are settling into their densest colonies.
The trade-offs: the first week still carries holiday prices, highland mornings are cold (Mexico City averages 43°F, or 6°C, at dawn, in rooms that rarely have heating), the Pacific off Cabo is a brisk 72°F (22°C), and a few windy cold fronts hit the Caribbean. For the absolute peak of gray whale season, February and March are better.
Weather by region
January is the heart of the dry season everywhere. Averages are long-term normals; see when to go for the full year.
| Place | Average high | Average low | Days with rain | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cancún and the Riviera Maya | 83°F (28°C) | 70°F (21°C) | About 6 | Sunny and breezy, the odd windy cold-front day |
| Puerto Vallarta | 83°F (28°C) | 62°F (17°C) | About 2 | Clear and warm, sweater weather at night |
| Los Cabos | 79°F (26°C) | 56°F (13°C) | About 1 | Dry and sunny, cool mornings, chilly water |
| Mexico City | 71°F (22°C) | 43°F (6°C) | About 3 | Bright days, cold mornings and nights |
| Oaxaca City | 79°F (26°C) | 50°F (10°C) | About 1 | Warm sun, cold dawns |
| San Miguel de Allende | Low 70s°F (about 22°C) | 30s to low 40s°F (1–6°C) | Rare | Warm in the sun, cold in stone houses |
Coasts
The Caribbean has its clearest water of the year and very little sargassum, with the sea near 79°F (26°C). Cold fronts called nortes blow through a few times a month, bringing a day or two of wind, rough water and evenings around 65°F (18°C). The Pacific from Puerto Vallarta south is dependably sunny, with the sea cooling toward about 77°F (25°C) by late winter. Baja Sur is mild by day; bring a wetsuit or plan short swims.
Highlands
Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Miguel and Guanajuato have warm, sunny afternoons and their coldest mornings of the year. The air is often clear enough in the mornings to see the volcanoes from Mexico City. San Cristóbal de las Casas can touch freezing, and the Copper Canyon rim can get snow.
What's on in January 2027

Just after January, Carnaval peaks in the days before Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2027, and Presidents' Day weekend (February 15) brings another US rush to the resorts.

Día de Reyes and the rosca
The Christmas season does not end on New Year's. On the night of January 5, many children leave their shoes out for the Three Kings, who bring presents by morning. On January 6, families, offices and friends share a rosca de reyes, a ring-shaped sweet bread topped with candied fruit, with tiny plastic baby figures baked inside.
Whoever finds a baby in their slice owes everyone tamales on February 2, Día de la Candelaria, which closes the holiday season. Bakeries and supermarkets sell roscas from late December; a slice with hot chocolate at a traditional bakery is the easiest way to join in. January 6 is not a public holiday, so offices, banks and shops are open.
Whale season
January is a strong month for whales, with every official season open. For 2025–26 the windows were December 8 to March 23 in Banderas Bay, December 15 to April 30 in Los Cabos and the Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio lagoons, and January 1 to April 30 in Magdalena Bay. The 2026–27 notice is usually similar.
| Where | Whale | Getting there | January verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Los Cabos | Humpbacks, some grays passing | Boats from Cabo San Lucas and San José | Reliable; January through March is the best stretch |
| Banderas Bay (Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita) | Humpbacks | Boats from the Nuevo Vallarta marina, Punta Mita, La Cruz and the Los Muertos pier | Peak; January and February are the most reliable months |
| Ojo de Liebre (Guerrero Negro) | Gray whales, mothers and calves | About 8 to 9 hours' drive south of San Diego, or small regional flights | Good, building toward a February to mid-March peak |
| San Ignacio Lagoon | Gray whales, often the friendliest | Eco-camps, often as fly-in packages from San Diego | Good, building toward the peak |
| Magdalena Bay | Gray whales | About 3 to 3.5 hours' drive from La Paz | Opens January 1; the easiest lagoon from Los Cabos |
Boats work under federal rules: at most four boats per whale or group, for up to 30 minutes, with no swimming near the whales. Pick an operator that shows its federal permit. In Puerto Vallarta, three-hour trips at one large operator start around US$69 on a speedboat and US$76 on a catamaran, quoted in dollars. Gray whale numbers fell sharply in the early 2020s and still vary a lot from winter to winter, so ask lagoon operators how the season is going before you commit to the drive. See Outdoors, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta.
Insider tip
In La Paz, juvenile whale sharks are also in season, with the most sightings from December through February. Swims are suspended when monitoring finds too few sharks, as has happened in recent seasons, so book with a refundable deposit.
Monarch butterflies
Late January into February is prime time at the monarch sanctuaries in the fir forests about 62 miles (100 km) northwest of Mexico City. In 2025–26 the colonies covered 2.93 hectares (about 7 acres), up 64% on the previous winter, according to Mexico's environment ministry and WWF.
- Where: the State of Mexico sanctuaries, rated Level 2 with no restrictions on US government employees. Piedra Herrada, near Valle de Bravo and about 2.5 hours from Mexico City, is the easiest day trip; El Capulín and La Mesa are quieter. The Michoacán sanctuaries (El Rosario, Sierra Chincua) are in a Level 4 state, and parts of the reserve are off-limits to US government employees.
- When: a sunny day, at the colony from late morning to early afternoon, when the butterflies warm up and fly. On cold, cloudy days they cluster and barely move.
- Cost: entry has run about MX$80–150 (about $4–8) per adult in recent seasons. Go with a reputable tour or driver, in daylight. See Day trips.

Holidays and closures
- Friday, January 1: banks, government offices and many small businesses close. Hotels, airports, ATMs and pharmacies work normally.
- Wednesday, January 6: Día de Reyes is a working day. Everything is open.
- Monday, February 1: Constitution Day, the first Monday of February. Banks, government offices and schools close, and Mexicans head to the coast and to towns such as Tepoztlán and Valle de Bravo for the long weekend.
Little else closes for the season. Mexican schools reopen around the first week of January, which is why domestic crowds thin out so fast. See Money for ATMs over long weekends.
Crowds and prices
| Dates | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Jan 1–3 | Peak holiday rates; airports and buses jammed on January 2 and 3 as everyone heads home |
| Jan 4–6 | Easing; some Mexican families stay through Reyes |
| Jan 7–15 | The big drop: high-season weather, quiet beaches, easier reservations |
| Jan 16–18 | MLK weekend bump at the US-facing resorts |
| Jan 19–29 | Quiet again, with whales and monarchs at their best |
January stays high season, so do not expect fall prices, especially in Los Cabos, which prices closer to Hawaii than to the rest of Mexico all winter. The drop after Reyes is still real, and it is biggest at the Cancún and Los Cabos resorts that quote in US dollars.
Fees that may change on January 1
Mexico's tourist fee, the Derecho de No Residente, is MX$983 (about $53) in 2026 and is built into your airfare if you fly. A 2027 fee law raises it to MX$1,158 (about $63): the Chamber of Deputies passed it in mid-October, and the full Senate approved it on October 27, 2026. Expect the higher amount from January 1, 2027, once the law is published. Quintana Roo's Visitax was about MX$290 (about $16) in 2026, and Baja California Sur's visitor fee was MX$488 (about $27); both are set each year. See Entry.
Save money
Fly down on or after January 7 and home before Friday, January 15, and you skip both the holiday tail and the MLK weekend. Tuesday and Wednesday flights are usually cheapest. See Flights.
Where to go this month, and where to skip
Los Cabos and Baja Sur
Humpbacks off the tip, gray whales a drive away, sea lions at Espíritu Santo, and dry sunny days. The water is cool for swimming.
Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit

Oaxaca and San Miguel
Sunny, uncrowded and cheaper after Reyes. Ask about heaters. San Miguel sits outside Guanajuato's restricted area. See Oaxaca and San Miguel.
Mérida and the Yucatán
The most comfortable month for Chichén Itzá, Uxmal and cenotes. See Ruins.
Think twice
- The Michoacán monarch sanctuaries: Level 4. Go to the State of Mexico side.
- Copper Canyon: freezing nights and possible snow, plus a Level 3 state with the canyon off-limits to US government employees. See Copper Canyon.
- Baja Norte beaches: Tijuana and Ensenada are in their mild, sometimes rainy winter, with cold Pacific water. The Valle de Guadalupe is quiet. See Baja Norte.
Chiapas is Level 3 with restricted zones, but Chiapa de Corzo, Tuxtla and San Cristóbal lie outside them; see Chiapas. Every state is on the Safety page; check the live advisory before you fly.
What to pack
- A warm jacket and layers for highland mornings and unheated rooms.
- A windbreaker and a fleece for whale boats, which are cold and wet at speed.
- Seasickness tablets for open-water whale trips.
- A rash guard or shorty wetsuit if you plan to snorkel in Baja.
- Sturdy shoes for the walk or horse ride up to the monarch colonies.
More on the packing list.

Getting around this month
- The return rush: January 2 and 3 are usually among the busiest travel days of the year at Mexican airports and bus stations. Allow about three hours before an international flight.
- Time zones: no daylight saving time outside the border, so in January Cancún matches New York, Mexico City matches Chicago and Los Cabos matches Denver.
- Route changes: American ends its Tulum–Miami nonstop on January 5, 2027. Winter seasonal routes to the beaches are flying. See Flights.
- Boats: nortes on the Caribbean and wind in Baja can cancel boat trips. Book whale and island days early in your stay so you have a spare day.
Bottom line
Go in January if you want whales, monarchs, reliable beach weather and high-season conditions at lower prices after the first week. Mid-January is one of the smartest times of the whole year to book.
Pick another month if you dislike cold mornings in the highlands, want warm Pacific swimming in Baja (go in the fall), or want the gray whale calves at their peak (February to mid-March). For the run-up, see Mexico in November and Mexico in December; for the whole year, when to go.
