Pick Punta Cana for a lower-cost, low-effort all-inclusive week: long reef-protected beaches in Bávaro, a short taxi from the airport and resorts that run the whole trip for you. Pick Cancún if you want more to do beyond the pool (cenotes, Maya ruins, Isla Mujeres, real Mexican food and nightlife) and nonstops from far more US cities, and you accept higher resort prices and more planning.

Both are about four hours from New York, share a State Department level and get sargassum in summer. Punta Cana is a resort coast with a few good outings; Cancún is a resort strip attached to a region you could explore for weeks.

Flights and airport transfers

Where you live matters most. Cancún has nonstops from more than 40 US metro areas, and from Texas, the Southeast and the Midwest it is often two to three hours away. Punta Cana gets nonstops from more than 30 US cities in peak season, weighted toward the East Coast, Florida, Chicago and Texas, and none from California or the Pacific Northwest.

From New York, Boston or Philadelphia it is close to a tie, so let fares and resort prices decide. From Houston or Dallas, Cancún saves about two hours each way. See the Dominican and Mexican flights pages for routes. Spirit Airlines stopped flying on May 2, 2026, so ignore any Spirit flights in old search results; our Spirit shutdown explainer covers who flies where now.

Getting to your hotel

Punta Cana is simpler. Official taxis wait outside both terminals with fixed fares per car: about $30 to Cap Cana, $30–40 to Bávaro and about $50–70 to Uvero Alto. Uber works at the airport, and UberX to Bávaro was around $16 in 2026. Details are on our Punta Cana airport taxi guide.

Cancún takes more care. After customs you pass timeshare sellers posing as transport desks, and Uber pickups at arrivals remain contested. Book ahead: a shared shuttle to the Hotel Zone is about $18 a person and a private car from about $25–50 per vehicle. The ADO bus downtown costs about MX$140 (about $8). Our Cancún airport transportation guide compares every option.

Watch out

At both airports, a "free" transfer in exchange for a short presentation is a timeshare pitch. Walk past, and keep your hotel name to yourself.

All-inclusive prices and quality

The Dominican Republic is the all-inclusive capital of the Caribbean, and the sheer number of resorts on the Punta Cana coast keeps prices down. A mid-range all-inclusive there runs about $250–500 a night for two once the 18% ITBIS sales tax and 10% service charge are added. Watch for rates quoted before those charges: they come in 28% short.

Cancún costs more for a comparable room. Most Hotel Zone and Costa Mujeres all-inclusives cost more than MX$8,000 (about $435) a night for two in high season, and only some fall to MX$3,500–8,000 ($190–435) in low season. Mexican bills add 16% IVA plus a state lodging tax, Cancún hotels add an environmental sanitation fee of about MX$80 (about $4) per room per night, and each foreign visitor pays the Visitax. One point in Cancún's favor right now: fall 2026 has been slow for its hotels, so September through mid-December is a good time to hunt for discounts.

On quality, the gap is smaller than the price suggests; both have the big brands. In Punta Cana, read the restaurant rules, since some mid-range resorts cap à la carte dinners per stay, and favor a recently renovated resort, because many opened in the 2000s. Cancún's newest resorts are in Costa Mujeres, with calm water and nothing to walk to. See our Dominican all-inclusive guide and Cancún for resorts by area.

Save money

Price a flight-and-hotel package against the resort booked direct. In Cancún, also price a room-only beach hotel plus meals downtown, which can beat the all-inclusive for couples who like to go out.

Beaches, swimming and sargassum

Punta Cana's strength is length: roughly 30 miles (50 km) of pale sand from Cap Cana to Uvero Alto. In central Bávaro and Los Corales an offshore reef knocks down most waves, so the water is usually clear, shallow and easy for children. From Arena Gorda north, and especially in Uvero Alto and at Playa Macao, the open Atlantic brings surf, currents and more red flags. See Punta Cana and Dominican beaches.

Cancún's Hotel Zone is shaped like a 7. The short arm (km 3–9) faces Isla Mujeres, with flat, shallow water and narrower beaches. The long arm (km 9–20) has the postcard beaches and rip currents that catch strong swimmers. Costa Mujeres is calm. Down the Riviera Maya, Puerto Morelos and Akumal add reef snorkeling and sea turtles from the beach.

Sargassum on each coast

Sargassum is a brown seaweed that drifts in from the Atlantic, piles up and smells of rotten eggs as it rots. Neither destination escapes it.

  • Punta Cana: the east coast is the most exposed part of the Dominican Republic. Expect it roughly from April or May to September, worst from May to August. Resorts rake daily and some install barriers. The calmer south coast around Bayahíbe and the islands are often less affected.
  • Cancún: mostly April to October. 2026 was heavy: Quintana Roo collected more than 152,000 metric tons by mid-October, though Cancún's beaches were in the moderate-to-low range in an October 10 state update while Tulum and the southern coast had the worst. The calm side of the Hotel Zone, Costa Mujeres and Isla Mujeres usually get less.

Insider tip

For a May to September trip, check the week's map before you pick a beach: Quintana Roo's sargassum traffic-light map for Cancún, and the forecast maps at Sargassum Monitoring for Punta Cana. Choose a resort with a pool you would enjoy anyway.

Things to do off the resort

This is where Cancún pulls ahead. Within two or three hours you have hundreds of cenotes, famous Maya sites, two islands and polished theme parks.

Cenotes

Cancún · 30 min–2 hr · $

Clear freshwater sinkholes. The Ruta de los Cenotes inland from Puerto Morelos is closest; most charge roughly MX$200–500 (about $11–27), cash.

Chichén Itzá and Tulum

Cancún · full day · $$

Chichén Itzá is about 2 hr 30 min each way; foreign visitors pay MX$697 (about $38) in entry fees. The clifftop ruins at Tulum cost MX$265 (about $14) for foreigners in 2026. See Mexico's ruins.

Isla Mujeres

Cancún · ferry 20–30 min · $

Calm Playa Norte, a golf cart around the island and lunch in town. The Xailing ferry is $14.50 each way. See the islands.

Saona Island

Punta Cana · 10–12 hr · $$

The classic Dominican boat day, with a sandbar pool and beach buffet. From a Punta Cana resort it is commonly $80–120 a person, with about 3 hours on the road; a night in Bayahíbe gets you the early boats.

Hoyo Azul and the springs

Punta Cana · half day · $$

A turquoise cenote under a cliff in Cap Cana's Scape Park, and the swimmable springs of the Indigenous Eyes reserve. Fewer than the Yucatán has, but close to the hotels.

Santo Domingo

Punta Cana · about 2 hr 30 min each way · $$

The cathedral and stone streets of the Zona Colonial. A long day trip, better as a night or two in Santo Domingo.

Add Playa Macao and the basilica in Higüey, and a week in Punta Cana has plenty for most people. For anyone restless by day three, Cancún has more. See the Dominican excursions page.

Entry rules and fees

Both countries let US citizens in without a visa, and both require a passport book to fly; the passport card will not get you on the plane. The paperwork differs.

  • Dominican Republic: fill in the free e-Ticket at eticket.migracion.gob.do before you fly in, and again for your flight home. Each one makes a QR code that is scanned at check-in and on arrival. The US$10 tourist card is already in your airfare, and you get 30 days. Lookalike sites charge $30 to $90 for the free form. See our e-Ticket guide and entry rules.
  • Mexico: no form to fill in before you fly. The immigration officer issues a digital FMM (visitor permit), stamps your passport and writes in your days, up to 180; check the number before you leave the booth. The federal visitor fee of MX$983 (about $53) is in your airfare. In Quintana Roo you also pay the Visitax, about MX$290 (about $16) per person, yourself, at visitax.gob.mx before you fly home. See Mexico entry rules.

Mexico's Congress approved raising the visitor fee to MX$1,158 (about $63) from January 1, 2027; the Senate vote came on October 27, 2026. For passport rules across countries, see our passport entry guide.

Money and tipping

In Punta Cana you can get through a resort week on US dollars, so bring a stack of $1 and $5 bills. Use pesos at colmados (corner stores) and local buses: RD$100 is about $1.60. Bills include a 10% service charge, the propina legal, and a small tip on top is customary: $1–2 a round for a bartender, $2–5 a day for housekeeping. See Dominican money.

In Cancún, many Hotel Zone businesses quote in dollars, but paying in pesos is almost always cheaper. Use a card with no foreign transaction fee and choose pesos at the terminal. Tip in pesos: MX$50–100 (about $3–5) a day for housekeeping, and 15% in restaurants. See Mexican money.

Safety: what the State Department says

The two are at the same level. The State Department rates the Dominican Republic at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, because of crime. The advisory, dated June 18, 2024 and reissued after review without changes, warns of violent crime across the country and notes that resort areas are better policed, with a tourist police force, POLITUR.

Mexico's advisory, issued May 29, 2026, rates each state. Quintana Roo, home to Cancún, is Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, with no special restrictions on US government employees. Since August 2025 the advisory has listed terrorism next to crime for almost every Mexican state. For Quintana Roo it warns that gang shootings have hurt bystanders and that Americans have been crime victims in tourist and non-tourist areas, and it asks visitors to be alert after dark.

In practice the risks are similar and mostly avoidable: spiked drinks, unofficial taxis, the ocean and roads. In Cancún, most violence is tied to the drug trade, so never buy drugs. In the Dominican Republic, roads and motorbike taxis are the bigger danger. Read Dominican safety and Mexico safety before you go.

Weather and hurricane season

Both share a calendar. The dry high season runs from about mid-December to April, with highs in the low to mid 80s°F (28–30°C) and peak prices at Christmas, Presidents' Day and spring break. May to November is hotter, more humid and cheaper. Cancún's winter nortes (cold fronts) can cancel boat trips for a day or two.

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 in both, riskiest from August to October. Direct hits are uncommon, though both have taken them: Fiona hit Punta Cana's province in 2022, and Wilma battered Cancún in 2005. For late summer or fall, buy travel insurance soon after your first payment, since policies often exclude storms already named. See Dominican seasons and Mexico by month.

Food and nightlife

Resort buffets taste much the same in both places. Step outside, and Cancún wins on food: downtown taquerías, markets, marquesitas (crisp rolled crepes) in Parque de las Palapas and Yucatecan dishes you will not find at home. See Mexican food.

Punta Cana's meals out are simpler: grilled lobster on the sand in El Cortecito, sunset bars at Los Corales, and a comedor (lunch counter) serving la bandera, rice, beans and stewed meat, for RD$250–400 (about $4–7). See Dominican food.

For nightlife, Cancún is the clear pick, with Coco Bongo and the open-bar clubs of the Party Center around km 9. Punta Cana's nightlife is mostly show and dance clubs in Bávaro, sold through resort tour desks, plus the resorts' own bars.

Families, couples and budget travelers

Families

Punta Cana is the easier family week: calm reef water in Bávaro, short transfers and resorts built around kids, such as Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts in Uvero Alto. Cancún suits older kids who want more than the pool; Xcaret's parks let ages 0–4 in free and charge ages 5–11 about 25% less. Check kids' club ages before you book.

Couples

Punta Cana has adults-only Secrets, Excellence, Zoëtry, Breathless and Hyatt Zilara resorts, polished Cap Cana and quiet Miches. Cancún has Le Blanc, Costa Mujeres and easy escapes to Isla Mujeres or Tulum (see Cancún vs Tulum). Couples who want to stay put should lean Punta Cana; those who want dinners out should lean Cancún.

Budget travelers

For an all-inclusive, Punta Cana is usually cheaper. Independently, Cancún is easier to do cheaply: downtown hotels under MX$1,500 (about $80), Hotel Zone buses for MX$12 (about 65 cents) and taco dinners. Bávaro has rentals under $100 a night and guaguas (minibuses) for RD$60–120 (about $1–2), but less to do without paid tours.

Can you do both?

Yes, though few people do. As of October 2026, Arajet, the Dominican low-cost airline, flies nonstop between Punta Cana and Cancún a few times a week, about three hours in the air; otherwise you connect through Miami. Check days and fares with the airline, and mind the clocks: Punta Cana is an hour ahead in winter.

  • Allow a full travel day, counting transfers at each end.
  • Pay the Visitax before leaving Quintana Roo, and do the Dominican e-Ticket before flying to Punta Cana.
  • For 9 or 10 nights, try 5 in Cancún with two day trips, then 4 or 5 lazy ones in Bávaro.
